In 2009 the Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, celebrated its 50th anniversary. Festival organizers
invited area quilters to work on a project during the 2009 festival that would 1) involve the public and 2) result in a
commemorative 50th-anniversary quilt.
On the weekend of June 12-14, 2009, several Pittsburgh-area quilters spent time in an "Artists in Action" tent in Point State Park. Some quilts by local quilt artists were on display. There were two ways in which the public participated: squares to sew together and squares to sign. The announcement of the activity is here. Quilters and non-quilters of all experience levels helped to create the quilt. Some people sat down with us and stitched 9-patches with no instruction at all; others needed to be shown how to hold a needle and stitch in a straight line. Here are some stitchers at the tent: Volunteers stitched the signature blocks and nine-patches into a quilt. The finished quilt: In April 2010, you can see the quilt at the annual show of Three Rivers Quilters, to be held IBEW Hall, 5 Hot Metal Street, on Pittsburgh's South Side. Next, the quilt will be on display at the 2010 Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 4-13, 2010. Also, see The Quilt is Ready! at the Arts Festival blog. |
